Legal Arrangements for Civil Partnerships

With same sex couples now receiving the recognition they deserve, our team can offer advice on entering into a civil partnership as well as advising on the consequences of dissolving a civil partnership. Premier Solicitors offer expert legal advice in all areas of civil marriage and domestic partnerships and most of our legal services can be arranged on a fixed fee basis.

What is a Civil Partnership?

A civil partnership is a legally registered relationship between two people of the same sex. In the UK, legislation came into force in December 2005 (The Civil Partnership Act) giving same sex couples in registered partnerships similar rights to married couples in relation to a number of important issues, including tax, state pensions, immigration and the right to apply for parental responsibility for your civil partner’s child.

Civil Partnership marriage legal advice

If you are entering into a civil partnership marriage then you should make sure you are well-prepared in terms of knowing your legal rights. Premier Solicitors highly experienced solicitors can help you and your partner with:

  • Pre-partnership (pre-nuptial) & cohabitation agreements - many people now choose to cohabit rather than marry. The protection of family assets will be of great importance at this time.
  • Preparing a Will - make things easier for your loved ones should the unthinkable happen.

Civil Partnership disputes legal advice

A civil partnership will come to an end if either you or your civil partner dies. Should you wish to end your civil partnership due to unreasonable behaviour (also known as a dissolution order) or be granted a separation order, you will need to get permission from a court. The highly experienced solicitors at Premier Solicitors can help you with this and much more including:

  • Informing the right people - we can help provide you with a list of who you may need to inform from your landlord to the tax office to your dentist to your bank and more.
  • Children issues - if you and your partner have children, you will need to sort out arrangements for the children when you end your civil partnership.
  • Home ownership - if you are going to court about your housing rights after a relationship  breakdown, you should consult an experienced civil partnership solicitor for advice.
  • Financial arrangements - you may need to sort out financial arrangements when your civil partnership ends. For example: child support, mortgage payments and general household bills. It would be useful to have an agreement written up by a solicitor in case of future issues.
