What is a Civil Partnership?

A civil partnership is a legally registered relationship between two people of the same sex. In the UK, legislation came into force in December 2005 (The Civil Partnership Act) giving same sex couples in registered partnerships similar rights to married couples in relation to a number of important issues, including tax, state pensions, immigration and the right to apply for parental responsibility for your civil partner’s child.
